How did life emerge? Quite little is known about the beginnings of life. Biophysicists from the Excellence Cluster ORIGINS in Munich are trying to create life in the laboratory. The researchers do not want to track the biological evolution that is reflected in the family tree of animals, plants and microorganisms. Rather, they are thinking of very rudimentary forms of life: the very first molecules that were able to reproduce themselves and pass on information independently. Such entities must have evolved from much simpler building blocks in an evolution of molecules.
